School Meals to Shine During National School Lunch Week 2005

ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 8, 2005 – Next week, and every week, approximately 145 million school lunches will be served to America’s children. Meeting federal nutrition guidelines, these balanced meals provide the fruits and vegetables, protein and whole grains that children need to succeed in school. Offered in age-appropriate portion sizes, and a great value at the national average of $1.75, healthy school lunches are coming out of hiding for National School Lunch Week 2005. Cafeterias in thousands of school districts nationwide will be inviting parents “in to lunch” this week to enjoy turkey wraps, corn and rice salad, cold milk and more.

A symphony of events will celebrate the 42nd annual National School Lunch Week (NSLW)
This week, television stations nationwide began airing “Healthy School Meals,” a thirty-second public service announcement. Featuring testimonials from school nutrition experts, the television spot highlights the importance school meals play in encouraging healthy eating habits by children.

In Fairfax, Virginia, on October 13, 2005, students of Sandburg Middle School will participate in a taste testing party. They will try out potential new menu offerings from the Fairfax County Public School’s Food and Nutrition Department. Nationally, the 2005 School Nutrition Association Operations Survey found that 90% of school districts involve students in taste tests.

From Spring, Texas, to Lakeland, Florida, school cafeterias will host celebrations featuring the 2005 National School Lunch Week theme “School Lunch - It’s Instrumental.” From cafeteria concerts and musical décor to “Lunchtime Idol” contests and iPod giveaways; students, teachers and school nutrition professionals will make the halls come alive with the sound of music.

NSLW was established in1963 by a proclamation by President John F. Kennedy. It is designed to help raise awareness of and garner support for the role that school foodservice and nutrition programs play in the lives of America’s children. School nutrition professionals carefully balance nutrition, student appeal and financial solvency to provide over 29 million schools lunches each school day. The School Nutrition Association celebrates the event each year with a theme and promotional materials. Otis Spunkmeyer sponsored the 2005 NSLW online promotional resources.

The School Nutrition Association (formerly ASFSA) is a national, non-profit professional organization representing more than 55,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country. The Association and its members are dedicated to feeding children safe and nutritious meals. Founded in 1946, SNA is the only association devoted exclusively to protecting and enhancing children’s health and well being through school meals and sound nutrition education.
