National School Lunch Week Campaign Highlights Regional Recipes & Healthy Changes in School Cafeterias
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (October 14, 2013) – This week, in celebration of National School Lunch Week, cafeterias nationwide are hosting the “School Lunch Across the USA” campaign to spotlight the nutritious regional recipes, ingredients and traditions that make every school cafeteria unique.
To celebrate, many schools will host special events with fun activities for students and take home sheets to inform parents about healthy changes in school cafeterias under the new nutrition standards for school meals. From Southern BBQ to Cincinnati chili, schools are dishing up healthy versions of regional recipes that incorporate local flavors into school menus and get students excited about eating school meals.
Schools are getting parents in on the fun too. Many are participating in “National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day,” inviting parents to visit the cafeteria, celebrate what’s great about school lunch, and learn how to get involved in promoting healthier choices for students. Reporters interested in learning about events planned across the country should contact Diane Pratt-Heavner at email@example.com.
To raise awareness of the importance of the National School Lunch Program, serving over 31 million of America’s students each day, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) helps schools recognize National School Lunch Week with an official campaign theme, suggested menus and recipes, promotional resources and more. This year’s “School Lunch Across the USA” campaign is sponsored by the non-profit School Nutrition Association along with the Milk Processors Education Program (MilkPEP) and McCormick for Chefs.
