Change is never easy, including in school nutrition. The May issue of School Nutrition, SNA’s award-winning flagship publication, explores how directors across the country have managed transitions and how they are looking forward while demonstrating that attitude is the real key to success. The issue also takes a look back at the highlights from March’s Legislative Action Conference, as well as at some whole-grain gains being enjoyed in both large and small districts as operators and industry work to add whole grains to recipes and products while still garnering kid acceptance.

For most school districts, even those ahead of the curve, implementation of the new federal meal pattern for school lunch was a difficult transition. Despite some enormous challenges, school nutrition operators are looking forward with enthusiasm. “Never a Dull Moment” profiles some directors who are successfully managing change and reveals their accomplishments and advice.

Bitter winds gusted across the nation’s capital just days after bitter words were exchanged on Capitol Hill following yet another failure of bipartisan compromise regarding the nation’s debt woes. However, neither snow nor sequester could slow the momentum of school nutrition professionals advocating for practical changes to school meal regulations at SNA’s 41st Legislative Action Conference. Take a look at the highlights of this March event in “Our Work Continues.”

Operators and industry make strides in adding whole grains to recipes and products without sacrificing kid appeal.
