Breakfast in the Classroom: New Participating Districts
As detailed in “Good Mornings” by Christina Uticone in the April 2012 issue of School Nutrition, as part of the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom initiative, the School Nutrition Foundation, Food Research and Action Center, National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation and National Education Association Health Information Network joined forces to work toward improving child health and educational outcomes through the expansion of the School Breakfast Program via the classroom delivery of healthy morning meals. To launch these efforts, five school districts were chosen to establish universal breakfast-in-the-classroom pilot programs, with generous funding support from the Walmart Foundation.
Earlier this year, the Walmart Foundation announced it will provide funding to extend this initiative through 2014, expanding support for universal breakfast-in-the-classroom pilot programs in eight new districts. The school districts that will be participating are:
- Charleston County (S.C.) School District
- Denver Public Schools
- Des Moines (Iowa) Public Schools
- Guilford County (N.C.) Schools
- Illinois School District U-46, Elgin, Ill.
- Jefferson County (Ky.) Public Schools
- Kansas City (Kan.) Public Schools
- Knox County (Tenn.) Schools
