How to Successfully Lobby State Legislatures
Speaker: Robert Guyer, Founder, Lobby School

For all practical purposes, state legislatures can do anything they want—either to you or for you. To gain favorable legislative action, you must be able to answer a fundamental lobbying question: “Why would that lawmaker give me his or her vote?” The purpose of this workshop is to develop some of the key skills necessary to advance or defeat proposed legislation. Drawing from Guyer’s workbook, Campaign Method for More Effective State Government Affairs, you will learn to:

  • Recognize rules for effective lobbying
  • Influence committees, including making effective committee testimony
  • Understand “how to” elements of coalition building
  • Work with legislative staff
  • Motivate lawmakers
  • Get and keep votes!

At the conclusion of the training, you will walk away with the tools to craft a winning legislative plan, build your lobbying organization, work with special interests and turn your ideas into law.
