SNA Submits Comments to USDA on Regulation on Implementing a Review Process

SNA recently submitted comments in response to a proposed rule entitled “Independent Review of Applications Required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010,” as published in the Federal Register on September 13, 2012. SNA submitted five pages of comments addressing a number of concerns with these additional regulatory requirements, including timing of implementation, integration with other changes, cost and staffing, source of errors, timeframes, training, and the process for review. USDA Awards First Grants to Increase Local Foods in Eligible Schools

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan recently announced more than $4.5 million in grants for 68 projects, spanning 37 states and the District of Columbia, to connect school cafeterias with local agricultural producers. The first-ever USDA Farm to School grants will help schools respond to the growing demand for locally sourced foods and increase market opportunities for producers and food businesses, including food processors, manufacturers, distributors. Grants will also be used to support agriculture and nutrition education efforts such as school gardens, field trips to local farms, and cooking classes. To read the full release, click here.

Share Our Strength Expanding No Kid Hungry Allies Program

In 2011, Share Our Strength launched the No Kid Hungry Allies Program and selected 13 nonprofit organizations in 12 states across the country to fight childhood hunger. These organizations have expertise in anti-hunger issues, child nutrition programs and work with low-income families; demonstrated the ability to develop creative strategies for ending childhood hunger; and presented a long-term, metric-driven plan with innovative solutions to ending child hunger in their community. This year, they are expanding the No Kid Hungry Allies program and are looking for additional organizations to join the fight to end childhood hunger. If you know of a nonprofit that may be a good fit, please direct them to http://nokidhungry.org/allies to learn more.
