SNA is excited to announce the release of its new meal pattern implementation guide, which was released last week during the 2012 Annual National Conference (ANC) in Denver. Entitled “We Can Do This: Advice and Resources for Meeting the New Meal Pattern,” the goal of this guide is to assist in the challenges of implementing the new meal pattern requirements for lunch. As part of the distribution efforts for this guide, six education sessions were held at ANC to discuss and share the new materials. Visit www.schoolnutrition.org/mealpattern to access the guide.

Federal Register Notice: National School Lunch, Special Milk, and School Breakfast Programs, National Average Payments/Maximum Reimbursement Rates

A Federal Register Notice has been released announcing the annual adjustments to the ‘‘national average payments,’’ the amount of money the Federal Government provides states for lunches, afterschool snacks and breakfasts served to children participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs; to the ‘‘maximum reimbursement rates,’’ the maximum per lunch rate from Federal funds that a state can provide a school food authority for lunches served to children participating in the National School Lunch Program; and to the rate of reimbursement for a half-pint of milk served to non-needy children in a school or institution which participates in the Special Milk Program for Children.

Federal Register Notice: Donated Foods

A Federal Register Notice has been released announcing the national average value of donated foods or, where applicable, cash in lieu of donated foods, to be provided in school year 2013 (July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013) for each lunch served by schools participating in the National School Lunch Program, and for each lunch and supper served by institutions participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

USDA Releases Interim Rule Regarding $.06 – SNA to Submit Comments

USDA has published an interim rule regarding performance-based cash assistance for school food authorities (SFAs) certified compliant with meal pattern and nutrition standards. This rule requires state agencies to certify participating SFAs that are in compliance with meal pattern requirements as eligible to receive an additional six cents per each reimbursable lunch served. This funding is available beginning October 1, 2012, and will be adjusted annually thereafter. This interim rule was effective July 1, 2012. Comments regarding rule provisions will be accepted until July 26, 2012. You can learn more here, or to view the full text of the interim rule, click here.

SNA will be submitting comments on the rule and strongly encourages others to do so. Once SNA’s comments are available we will share them in Tuesday Morning and on SchoolNutrition.org. An archived webinar is available here.
