Message About TAM

Tuesday Morning (TAM) was home sick on Tuesday, July 3rd. Apologies for the delay – but here is your Thursday Morning! We hope you all had a great 4th of July! Also, during SNA’s upcoming Annual National Conference (ANC) we will not be sending TAM on July 17th but look for it to resume on July 24th!

SNA Releasing Meal Pattern Implementation Guide at ANC in Denver

SNA is taking an active role in addressing meal pattern questions and has appointed an Ad Hoc Working Group to develop a practical “How-To" Guide for SNA members. The goal of this Guide is to assist in the challenges of implementing the new meal pattern requirements for lunch scheduled to go into effect this fall. As part of the distribution efforts for this Guide, six education sessions will be held at ANC 2012 in Denver to discuss and share the new materials.

Entitled "We Can Do This: Advice and Resources for Meeting the New Meal Pattern," this hot topic session will provide you with sample menus, resources and other valuable tools needed to interpret and implement the new meal pattern regulations. It will be presented by the SNA Ad Hoc Meal Pattern Working Group consisting of school nutrition operators, state agency officials, industry and USDA representatives.

We urge you to take advantage of this important educational offering, and be fully prepared to meet the new meal pattern requirements, as well as ready to show off all the healthy changes in your school cafeteria. The session will be repeated throughout the conference (see dates and times below), so that everyone has an opportunity to attend.

Sunday, July 15 (12:00-1:00 pm)
Monday, July 16 (2:15-3:15 pm)
Tuesday, July 17 (10:00-11:00 am and 2:15-3:15 pm)
Wednesday, July 18 (1:30-2:30 pm and 2:45-3:45 pm)

USDA Releases Interim Rule Regarding $.06 – SNA to Submit Comments

USDA has published an interim rule regarding performance-based cash assistance for school food authorities (SFAs) certified compliant with meal pattern and nutrition standards. This rule requires state agencies to certify participating SFAs that are in compliance with meal pattern requirements as eligible to receive an additional six cents per each reimbursable lunch served. This funding is available beginning October 1, 2012, and will be adjusted annually thereafter. This interim rule is effective July 1, 2012. Comments regarding rule provisions will be accepted until July 26, 2012. You can learn more here, or to view the full text of the interim rule, click here.

SNA will be submitting comments on the rule and strongly encourages others to do so. Once SNA’s comments are available we will share them in Tuesday Morning and on SchoolNutrition.org. An archived webinar is available here.
