USDA Releases Interim Rule Regarding $.06 – SNA to Submit Comments

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has published an interim rule regarding performance-based cash assistance for school food authorities (SFAs) certified compliant with meal pattern and nutrition standards. This rule requires state agencies to certify participating SFAs that are in compliance with meal pattern requirements as eligible to receive an additional six cents per each reimbursable lunch served. This funding is available beginning October 1, 2012, and will be adjusted annually thereafter.

This interim rule is effective July 1, 2012. Comments regarding rule provisions will be accepted until July 26, 2012. You can learn more here, or to view the full text of the interim rule, click here. SNA will be submitting comments on the rule and strongly encourages others to do so. Once SNA’s comments are available we will share them in Tuesday Morning and on SchoolNutrition.org.

Earlier this month, SNA hosted a webinar on the topic and more than 1,000 people participated. The archived webinar is available online; if you missed it you can find it here.

Proposed Legislation: SLICE (School Lunch Improvements in Children’s Education) Act

The SLICE (School Lunch Improvements for Children’s Education) Act, Bill: H.R. 5789 - cosponsored by Reps. DeLauro (D-CT), Schakowsky (D-IL), Filner (D-CA), Carnahan (D-MO), Engel (D-NY), Moran (D-VA), seeks to restore federal efforts to protect students’ health by allowing more sensible nutrition standards for pizza in public school meals. The SLICE Act would restore USDA’s authority to implement healthful standards for pizza in public schools in three significant ways:

  • Allow the USDA to accurately count 1/8 of a cup of tomato paste as 1/8 of a cup, instead of half of a cup, which qualifies pizza as a vegetable;
  • Allow the USDA to implement science-based sodium reduction targets; and
  • Allow the USDA to set a whole grain requirement.

Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! Healthy School Meal Contest

You work hard every day to put together innovative, delicious and healthy school meals for your students. So, why not share your ideas?! The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, SNA and the Yum-o organization are searching for your healthy school lunches. By sending in your best healthy tray, including meat/meat alternative, bread/grain, vegetables and fruit, you will get the chance to win a trip to New York City to watch a taping of the Rachael Ray Show and be featured in SNA’s School Nutrition magazine. Meals will be judged on nutrition, appeal to students, ease of replication in schools, and presentation. Visit the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s website, www.healthiergeneration.org, to submit your ideas. All submissions must be received by June 15, 2012.

Michelle Obama Backs Healthy-Lunch Recipe Contest

First Lady Michelle Obama is helping launch a nationwide contest asking kids and parents to submit recipes for healthy lunches. The winners will be invited to the White House for a kids' "State Dinner." The “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge” invites parents and their children, ages 8-12, to create an original lunchtime recipe that is “healthy, affordable and tasty.” The recipe contest is open for entries now until June 17. Participants are encouraged to reference the USDA’s “MyPlate” nutritional guidelines when developing their recipes. “Entries should represent each of the food groups, either in one dish or as parts of a lunch meal, including fruit, veggies, whole grains, protein and low-fat dairy foods,” the contest announcement stated.
