USDA Announces Steps to Streamline Administration and Enhance Program Integrity in NSLP

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced new steps to improve the delivery of USDA services while creating greater efficiencies to make the most of taxpayer dollars. USDA's Food and Nutrition Service is joining forces with six states on new demonstration projects to connect eligible low-income children with free school meals automatically based on information received from Medicaid. The new process will allow for administrative efficiencies, reduce improper payments and streamline efforts to provide access to critical nutrition for kids across the nation.

The six states to pilot the demonstration projects are: Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, New York and Pennsylvania. They will begin their respective projects on July 1 for school year 2012-2013. Kentucky and Pennsylvania plan to conduct statewide projects while the others will choose specific locations.

Direct certification is just one way USDA is promoting effective program management and reducing and preventing the instance of improper payments. Through this process USDA hopes to prevent errors that would compromise access for those truly in need.

Chairwoman Stabenow to Convene Farm Bill Hearing on Risk Management and Commodities

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Chairwoman of the US Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, will hold a Committee hearing on Wednesday, March 14, at 10:00 am EDT in room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building. The hearing, “Risk Management and Commodities in the 2012 Farm Bill,” will evaluate the need for and cost effectiveness of risk management tools offered to farmers who face increasingly unpredictable crop prices, input costs and natural disasters; and how the federal government can provide appropriate risk management tools while making the best use of limited resources. Acting Undersecretary Michael Scuse, of USDA’s Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, will testify. A live webcast of the hearing can be viewed on the Committee’s website at http://ag.senate.gov.
