Scholarships for SNA Members
Provided by the School Nutrition Foundation

 

For over 30 years, the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) has been raising funds to provide SNA members the opportunity to achieve their higher education goals through a wide variety of scholarships. To date, SNF has awarded members over $2 million in scholarships.

Scholarships to Attend SNA National Conferences

Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow
Every year, the SNF gives one current SNA member from the employee or manager category the opportunity to attend SNA's annual Legislative Action Conference (LAC) as the Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow.

The Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow will travel to Washington, D.C., with all travel expenses paid up to $3,000. Expenses include airfare, ground transportation, and hotel accommodations, as well as conference registration and a per diem for meals.

To apply, you must:

  • Be a SNA employee or manager section member currently and for the last three years (having joined SNA no later than December 7, 2010)
  • Have never previously attended LAC
  • Submit an application form by Friday, January 24, 2014. Please preview the application before applying online.

Please note that director level members are not eligible for this fellowship.

Dr. Martin is a pioneer in the field of child nutrition. Launching her career at the Georgia Department of Education in 1950 as the assistant school lunch director, she soon became a vocal advocate for child nutrition, influencing legislation on the community, state and federal levels.

ANC First-Timer Scholarship
The ANC First-Timer Scholarship gives SNA members from the employee and manager categories who have never attended SNA’s Annual National Conference the opportunity to take advantage of the valuable educational and professional development opportunities to advance their careers at this event.

This scholarship is available to current SNA members in the employee and manager categories who have never attended SNA’s ANC. The member must be nominated by his or her district director. The district director must also be attending ANC.

Multiple $500 scholarships will be given and each may be used to cover registration and travel expenses associated with attending ANC.

Before completing the nomination, please have the following information available:

  • Director’s contact information
  • Director’s ANC registration and proof of payment
  • Address information where scholarship check should be sent

Kathleen Stitt Award
The Kathleen Stitt Award is presented to a graduate student or faculty member participating in the Child Nutrition Showcase at SNA's Annual National Conference (ANC). This $500 award is given to help defray travel expenses incurred to attend ANC.

To be considered for this award, the applicant must:

  • Currently be a SNA member
  • Be a graduate student enrolled full-time in an MS or PhD program at an accredited college or university, or be a faculty member employed at an accredited college or university.
  • Accepted to participate in the Child Nutrition Showcase at SNA's Annual National Conference
  • Application must be accompanied by an itemized budget, as well as proof of student status
  • Submit a completed application and supporting documentation

Professional Development Scholarships

SNF Scholarships for Members Pursuing Degrees
Three scholarships are available to SNA members who are enrolled or will be enrolled in a degree program at a vocational/technical, undergraduate, graduate or post graduate level in the United States. The program of study should fall into one or more of the SNA Keys to Excellence subject areas.

  • Operations
  • Nutrition, Nutrition Education and Physical Activity
  • Administration
  • Marketing and Communications

Scholarships include:

  • SNF Professional Growth: The SNF Professional Growth Scholarship is funded by SNA members through a designated fundraising event. Scholarships of up to $2,500 each are awarded.
  • Schwan’s Food Service: Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., makes an annual donation of $50,000 which provides funds to the SNF’s scholarship program. This scholarship enables SNF to “foster good nutrition in school lunch programs and to improve school foodservice management”. Scholarships of up to $2,500 each are awarded.
  • Nancy Curry: Funded by Handgards, Inc., and friends of Nancy, this scholarship is for SNA members employed in school foodservice. One scholarship of $500 is awarded.

The applicant must be an active member for a minimum of one year from February 1, 2013, with the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and have a history of employment in school foodservice. Children of SNA members are no longer eligible to apply for scholarships. If you need to confirm membership, please call 1 (800) 877-8822.

Equipment Scholarships

Winston Equipment Award
SNF and Winston Industries are committed to school food service. Each year since 2007, the Winston Industries Equipment Award Grant program has awarded equipment to one school district needing improvement of its school meal kitchen facilities.

Congratulations to the 2013 winner of the Winston Equipment Award Grant: Renee Frederick, Food Services Supervisor, Warrior Run (Pa.) School District!
