Whole Grains Council Seeking Entries for Whole Grains Challenge

 Permanent link

October 5, 2012—The Whole Grains Council invites school nutrition professionals to enter the Sixth Annual Whole Grains Challenge. Participants can enter in one of two categories: “Veterans,” for those schools that had been offering a variety of whole grains even before the new meal pattern regulation, and “Rookies,” for schools that have made significant progress in boosting whole grains in school meals, but could use some additional assistance in preparing kid-friendly whole-grain options. One school will win the grand prize of a visit from a guest chef, who will conduct a workshop on preparing whole-grain kid-friendly dishes.

Five winners from each category will receive a variety of cases of whole grain-rich products.

Entries are due November 1, 2012. For more information or to enter, visit www.wholegrainscouncil.org/get-involved/2012-whole-grains-challenge.

I have been serving whole Grain items within my menus for 2 years now before the mandation.Examples of recipe use (Whole Grain Spaghetti Nooddles,Whole Grain Rotini,Whole Grain Macaroni). I have used commodity whole grain Pasta and offered whole wheat bread every time on menu.I now serve the Whole Grain White Bread only which at first was not welcomed but, within the time now accepted much better-children do not adapt well to change -it is up to Food Service and all other School Staff to spread out a positive environment to promote the changes and our District.Staff in whole have helped alot with this transition. This has cut down complaints and less noticable food item changes with feeding students by serving whole grain 2 years in advance. I feel our students in District 217 have adapted with less negative comments and with more of a potitive attitude in the serving line. Children eat with their eyes first and by appearance so, I work on making food itemS fancy in the serving line. I have a decorated salad bar that we do not use any longer. I have the Fruit and Veggie linen tablecloths to decorate with attraction to the new guidelines informational booth for students to take at copies at free will to communicate the new guidelines. This is a very attractive informational booth that also decorates our High School/Middle School cafeteria. I am very proud of our Children throughout our District in helping our Food service Department be a success in this transition.
