March 12, 2010—In conjunction with National Agriculture Week (March 14-20), SNA members may find value in the Wheat Foods Council’s How Wheat Works program. The Wheat Foods Council describes the online program as a virtual farm-to-fork experience for people of any age and of any region. In each of the four phases—planting, harvesting, milling/baking and the supermarket—participants learn about agriculture, milling, baking and nutrition. Each phase takes just several minutes to complete.
The How Wheat Works program, which spans the course of four days, also includes educational activity plans, such as lessons on nutrition labels, general wheat nutrition and using wheat in baking. After each participant completes a quiz at the end of the program, the Wheat Foods Council donates two pounds of flour to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency and morale assistance for troops, with help from ADM and ConAgra.
The virtual program could be a valuable learning opportunity for both school nutrition professionals and students. To experience the program, visit www.howwheatworks.com.
