Professional Standards Recommendations approved by SNA Board of Directors

October 26, 2009 -- Several months ago, an Ad Hoc Committee of SNA Past Presidents presented to the SNA Board of Directors a proposal calling for the establishment of standards for professionally qualified directors of school nutrition programs at the State and LEA levels.  As part of SNA’s annual plan of work, the Association believed there was a need to elevate its actions on this issue, especially as it relates to Child Nutrition Reauthorization.

As a follow-up to this action, the House of Delegates held a mega issue discussion at the SNA 2009 Annual National Conference (ANC) in Las Vegas to determine whether the Association should adopt and advocate for Federal professional standards as part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act.  The outcome of that discussion was overwhelmingly in favor of developing some type of professional standards and that it was best for SNA to lead the way.

Following ANC, a 12-member Task Force was identified and approved by the SNA Board of Directors.  On August 20-22, 2009, the SNA Professional Standards Task Force convened in National Harbor, MD to draft recommendations for professional standards for school nutrition professionals.

Following their development, the recommendations were posted – for a two week period – to the SNA website for comment and input.   Input was received via blog, survey monkey, emails and faxes.  The final recommendations took into account numerous comments from SNA members and allied organizations.
 
Most recently at its October Committee Days meetings, the SNA Board of Directors approved the recommendations of the Task Force.  With the approval of these recommendations, the Association can begin its discussions with Congress, USDA and other allied groups as it seeks to get these professional standards incorporated as part of Child Nutrition Reauthorization efforts.

SNA believes professional standards will elevate the quality and efficiency of School Nutrition Programs nationwide with respect to nutrition, food safety, operations and fiscal management by ensuring that all administrators are better qualified to manage these complex programs.
