December 12, 2012—Earnestine Camp, who dedicated much of her life to the school nutrition profession, passed away December 6, 2012, at age 92. Camp worked for the School Food Service section of the Arkansas Department of Education in Little Rock, Ark., for 25 years after teaching home economics. She earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics and a master’s degree in education.
During her career, which she began in 1942 prior to the enactment of the National School Lunch Act in 1946, Camp served as Southwest regional director of what was then the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) and as advisor to the executive board of the formerly-named Arkansas School Food Service Association.
“Earnestine was an advocate, champion, encourager, supporter, leader and role model in her contributions to feeding Arkansas children and in her spiritual life. Her ability to encourage young women to exceed their own personal expectations [was tremendous, as evidenced by a comment from one person she mentored that] ‘She believed in me, more than I believed in myself,’” said Wanda Shockey, MEd, RD, director of the Child Nutrition Unit of the Arkansas Department of Education.
In lieu of flowers, Camp’s family requests that friends and colleagues make donations to The Earnestine Camp Arkansas School Fund, c/o Arkansas School Nutrition Association, P.O. Box 3542, Little Rock, AR 72203; Arkansas Children’s Hospital, # 1 Children’s Way, Little Rock, AR 72202; or Immanuel Baptist Church, 501 North Shackleford Road, Little Rock, AR 72211.
