SNA Joins American Dietetic Association and Society for Nutrition Education in Affirming the Importance of Schools in Improving Child Nutrition and Health
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (November 1, 2010) - As Congress, First Lady Michelle Obama and communities across the country seek ways to address the deepening childhood obesity crisis, three leading organizations in the field of nutrition have united to emphasize the importance of schools in promoting healthy lifestyles for children.
The School Nutrition Association (SNA) has joined the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and Society for Nutrition Education (SNE) in releasing a position paper in support of comprehensive, integrated nutrition services in K-12 schools. The paper, published today in the November issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, affirms the key role schools can play in improving the nutrition, health and academic performance of America’s children. The paper will also run later this month in SNA’s publication, The Journal of Child Nutrition & Management.
The organizations, updating a 2003 joint position paper, also cite the tremendous potential for local school wellness policies to strengthen comprehensive nutrition services within schools by bringing together key players throughout the community to address the school needs on multiple fronts.
The position paper was written by registered dietitians Marilyn Briggs, PhD, RD, SNS (ADA); Constance G. Mueller, MS, RD, SNS (SNA); and Sheila Fleischhacker, PhD, JD (SNE).
