Every year, the ANC exhibit hall brings together the best in school nutrition. But this year’s will be hard to top. Who knew school nutrition could be so creative and forward thinking!
Walking around the hall was an experience in itself. Not only did I fulfill my daily nutritional requirements thanks to the endless supply of booth samples, (bless the maker of pre-made PB&J whole wheat sandwiches) but I got to check out some of the most advanced technology and software the industry has to offer, like touch screen computer hardware for cafeteria POS systems and advanced application scanning.
Sustainability was another big theme present throughout the hall. Safety and sanitation companies have truly gone green in their efforts to provide sustainable HACCP, food safety and sanitation solutions for school nutrition programs. Other vendors introduced state-of-the-art energy efficient convection ovens which are taking the place of deep fat fryers across the country.
Needless to say, it’s been a whirlwind experience. I can’t wait for next year’s ANC in Dallas, TX!
One day later and ANC is still abuzz regarding the second general session. Erik Wahl, who uses art to encourage professionals to tap into their creativity, gave an exciting presentation. The attendees were wowed by his inspirational words and live painting - featuring the music of U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and more! At the end of his presentation, he received not one, but two standing ovations. We hope that audience members took to heart his message, most importantly: "Stop trying to be perfect, and try to be remarkable!"
Were you at the second general session? What did you take away from Erik Wahl’s presentation? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
At the school nutrition event of the year, there is so much to see and do. Along with visiting the largest exhibition floor in the school nutrition industry, convention-goers attended a plethora of education sessions that cover a range of topics affecting the profession. Some of the sessions at this year’s conference included:
These are just a few of many great education sessions at ANC this year. What was your favorite? Post a comment below to let us know!
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, but this...we just have to share. Every year, SNA state presidents work tirelessly to further the mission of the Association. In the spirit of Las Vegas, we decided to kick things up a notch and bring in a few fan favorites to help honor these incredible individuals.
Who better to do that than Sonny and Cher circa 1970! Decked out in sequins and shag, the dynamic duo took the stage with a fantastic rendition of "I've Got You Babe" and presented the Thelma Flanagan Gold Achievement Award, the Louise Sublette Award of Excellence and the Heart of the Program Award to honorees from over 40 states. Talk about making an entrance! Honorees hit the catwalk in style rubbing elbows with "The King" himself - Mr. Elvis Presley. Where else but Vegas can you share the spotlight with not one, not two, but three pop icons!?
If you missed the action this morning, don't fret. Rumor has it that Elvis is in the building for the remainder of the day. Look for a white bejeweled jumpsuit and matching cape/cumberbund combo. Also be sure to congratulate your colleagues and thank them for their hard work and unwavering dedication to the cause.
