Pre-Conference Sessions

Think you have no time for professional development? Think again! Pre-conference sessions are a great way to stay ahead of the curve by gaining access to information you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, you’ll earn while you learn. In addition to the 25 CEUs you will receive for your full paid registration and attendance at ANC, you can earn even more CEUs by participating in one of the pre-conference sessions previewed below. Pre-conference sessions also allow you to earn Key Area Hours toward initial certification or for moving up a level. Learn more about the SNA Certification Program.

Nutrition 101: A Taste of Food and Fitness
Speakers: NFSMI Trainers
This training program provides a basic overview of nutrition with an emphasis on the importance of balance in daily food choices and the inclusion of physical activity as a key component to good health. You will engage in a variety of learning activities, including physical activity boosters, tasting activities and interactive discussion. Course is offered by the National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI). Lunch will be provided.

Serving It Safe
Speakers: Beth Mincemoyer Egan, SNS, Cyndie Story, PhD, SNS
Food safety is the responsibility of every person in foodservice. Every action in a school nutrition program has the potential to impact the safety of the food, whether during purchasing, receiving and storing, preparing, cooking, holding and serving, cooling and reheating or cleaning. This food safety training provides instruction on the management of a safe and sanitary foodservice operation. Course is offered by the National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI). Lunch will be provided.

Community Eligibility Provision—Partnering for SUCCESS
Speakers: Cynthia Ham and Julia Laurie Cartrett
Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) needs to be evaluated carefully by each individual school district, while involving the various stakeholders in this decision-making process. During this pre-conference session, you will develop a plan for determining the feasibility of CEP for local districts, recognize and prepare for the changes, determine the stakeholders of the CEP process and learn how to include all stakeholders in the implementation of CEP.

Food Allergy Management & Education: Become a Food Allergy Star!

You are the first line of defense in preventing a food allergic reaction at school! This interactive pre-conference session empowers you with knowledge and skills necessary to help protect students served every day. Discover how to make safe meal substitutions, how to prevent cross-contact and other key avoidance strategies. CHAPTER LEADERSHIP DAY

Attention Chapter Leaders! Need ideas to reinvigorate your chapter? Want to network with other chapter leaders from across the country? This unique event is your opportunity to gather the fresh ideas that will help you lead your chapter through a successful year. Presentations will cover topics such as planning your year of leadership, growing membership, building strong chapters, and leading effective and meaningful meetings. You also will learn more about SNA’s new chapter resources. All chapter leaders are encouraged to attend this event.

Financial Management for School Nutrition Directors

This program focuses on the management of finances and other resources as the foundation for nutrition integrity and quality meals in school nutrition programs. Key topics include communication and ethics, development of a financial management information system, managing revenue and expenditures, controlling food and labor costs, budget development and tools to analyze financial status. The course is offered by the National Food Service Management Institute (NSFMI). Lunch will be provided.

State Agency Pre-Con: How to Anticipate Tomorrow Today 
Speakers: Glenn Tecker, Leigh Wintz, Tecker International, LLC
Targeted exclusively to State Agency Directors and their staff, this pre-conference session will provide eight hours of interactive training on how to develop and enhance communications and information flow. Learn how to juggle multiple challenges in a quick paced environment. Discover how to anticipate change and respond strategically. Split into two modules, the morning session will be devoted to leadership development which will lay the groundwork for a mega issue discussion in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided.

Supervisory Skill Training for Managers

Getting the Most Out of SAE Funds

This interactive session will provide you with the ins and outs of State Administrative Expense (SAE) funds and how they can be used. You will also hear about the collaboration between the John Stalker Institute and the Department of Education in creating professional development and the benefit to schools in Massachusetts. The session will also include short training sessions (e.g. culinary techniques) that will provide you with a snapshot of the professional development being offered.

Meeting Training Requirements for Proposed Professional Standards *SOLD OUT*
Speakers: Katie Wilson, PhD, SNS, and Barbara Jirka, PhD, RD, SNS
This session will provide all the information you need to create your 2014–15 Staff Training Plan ensuring your team is meeting the Professional Standards Training Requirements. You will leave with a training plan for all levels of staff in your program. Learn about the vast array of school nutrition training available in your state, nationally and regionally, as well as training you can customize for your district. Laptops will be provided or bring your own.

SNA reserves the right to cancel any pre-conference session due to low registration. In the event of cancellation, the Association will contact registrants. SNA advises pre-conference registrants to wait to make any schedule-dependent transportation plans until May 15, 2014.
